Hadrian's Wall Roman mosaic commission
03/11/2023
It has been one of the highlight's of my mosaic career to be commissioned by Newcastle City Council to create a mosaic art trail at the Roman fort of Condercum on the iconic Hadrian's Wall.
The project began with a day long consultation and activities with residents of Benwell (modern day Condercum). We created sketches, made mosaic coasters and decorated Centurians helmets.
The City Council's brief was to create mosaics which reflected the artefacts found on site during recent digs.
These included coins, amphora, pottery, signs of blacksmith activity, the foundations of a warehouse and trees growing at the time (including ash, oak blackthorn, willow and alder).
The mosaics run along the path of the Dorcas Avenue play area, Benwell Newcastle.
